BANKSY | Curated Anarchy

21 Aug 2015

Banksy's anarchic theme park 'Dismaland' in Weston-super-Mare bills itself as 'a festival of art, amusements and entry-level anarchism'. This large show on the sea-front has caused international intrigue, not only due to its shady creation, bold artistic displays, and outrageous ticket touting; but also as it has been curated by Banksy himself.

The elusive graffiti artist Banksy has brought together more than 50 artists from 17 countries, exhibiting works in various media unconfined to street art from well-known contemporary figures such as Damien Hirst, David Shrigley and Polly Morgan. It is a testament to Banksy's elevated status in the art world that he has been able to unite so many different artists under the same theme / cause, bringing an avant-garde edge to this Victorian seaside resort. In relation to the show, Banksy states “I guess you’d say it’s a theme park whose big theme is — theme parks should have bigger themes.”

The park has 10 new original pieces by Banksy, whose work is benefiting from unprecedented commercial appeal. His popularity has translated into a higher demand for his work, which is now increasingly hard to find in secondary markets.

Dismaland has been well-received by local residents and councilors in Weston-super-Mare benefiting the local economy and creating international exposure.

Andipa Gallery has supported and invested in Banksy since his early career. Director Acoris Andipa states 'It's very simple really...I love the work of Banksy, that's why I collect his work for the gallery, my clients and myself. His international appeal is well deserved and I hope we will leave him be, to continue to work in the way he chooses.'
