Modigliani | The Muse

‘When a woman poses for a painter, she gives herself to him.’

— Amedeo Modigliani

On Monday the 9th of November, Christie’s New York saw the sale of Modigliani’s 'Nu Coucheé', 1917-18, which realised a rather impressive $170.4 million, becoming the second highest price paid for an artwork at auction. The work was part of Christie’s 'The Artist’s Muse: A Curated Evening Sale', which joined Modigliani amongst the likes of Courbet, Giacometti and De Kooning - a rather eclectic aesthetic of styles, linked semantically in their depiction of the muse.

Andipa Gallery is proud to own its own collection of modernist muses, with Henri Mattie’s ink drawing 'Femme Nue',1927 and Pablo Picasso’s linocut 'Femme Endormie',1962.
